Maryland Insurance Administration to Support 17th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

June 15 speaking engagement aims to help raise awareness of elder abuse

BALTIMORE – Mark your calendars! World Elder Abuse Awareness Day happens this year on Thursday, June 15, 2017. This year marks the 17th annual observance of this international day. The day is in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action which recognizes the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue.

Communities and municipalities will make proclamations declaring June 15, 2017 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and hold events designed to raise their communities’ awareness of elder abuse. The first Awareness Day in 2006 involved several hundred organizations and governmental bodies at international, national, regional, local, community and neighborhood levels on every continent in the world. The Maryland Insurance Administration will be supporting events across Maryland on this day.

Insurance Commissioner Al Redmer, Jr. will join Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman June 15, 2017 at 10 a.m. at the Howard County Library Miller Branch, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, MD.

Governments, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, religious groups, professionals in the field of aging, interested individuals as well as older persons themselves will promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by organizing activities around the world to raise awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.

Throughout the world, abuse and neglect of older persons is largely under-recognized or treated as an unspoken problem. Unfortunately, no community or country in the world is immune from this costly, public health and human rights crisis. Research indicates that public education campaigns like World Elder Abuse Awareness Day are vital for informing people about elder abuse.

“We recognize the importance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue so we have taken the extra step to partner with other like-minded organizations to raise awareness around this topic,” said Commissioner Redmer. “We look forward to participating in several outreach events related to World Elder Abuse Awareness across the state of Maryland.”

Public events supported by employees of the Maryland Insurance Administration’s Consumer Education and Advocacy Unit include:

  • World Elder Abuse Awareness Event at the Atrium Village in Owings Mills, MD: Steve Wright, Associate Commissioner - Fraud at the Maryland Insurance Administration will speak to residents at 11 a.m. on insurance fraud and scams targeting seniors. The event will be at the Atrium Village, 4730 Atrium Court, Owings Mills, MD.
  • Baltimore County World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Randallstown Community Center, 3505 Resource Drive, Randallstown, MD.
  • On June 14th, the Maryland Insurance Administration will participate in the Montgomery County World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Rockville Senior Center, 1150 Carnation Drive, Rockville, MD.
